Monona Bakery and Eatery
About This Spot
Walking into Monona Bakery and Eatery feels like entering a lively neighborhood kitchen where the warmth of Latin American roots infuses the air. The hum of conversation blends with the gentle clatter of dishes and the occasional call from the counter, creating an inviting rhythm that never rushes but always welcomes. This is a place where the pace invites you to slow down, savor the moments, and enjoy the comforting presence of a space that feels both familiar and a little adventurous.
At the heart of Monona Bakery and Eatery is a genuine celebration of Honduran flavors and broader Latin American traditions, reflected in a menu that walks the line between bakery delights and hearty, made-to-order meals. Whether it’s the soft pull of a freshly baked morning bun, the tactile satisfaction of a pupusa folding its savory fillings inside handmade dough, or the careful layering of sweetness in a tres leches cake, each bite speaks of care, heritage, and time-honored recipes handed down with a modern touch.
The eatery’s atmosphere leans into a casual charm that feels like an old-school diner with a neighborhood twist. You place your order at the counter, then carve out your own space among other diners who, like you, are settling in for a meal meant to be savored rather than rushed. There’s an authenticity here in the service rhythm and the way dishes arrive just as they’re ready—fresh, vibrant, and full of character.
In addition to traditional breakfast options that resonate with home-cooked comfort, the menu quietly surprises with its thoughtful variety—flavors that showcase the colorful culinary tapestry of Honduras and beyond. Natural juices like passion fruit and hibiscus add a bright note alongside rich coffee, all of which complement not just the food but the welcoming environment where meals become shared experiences.
Monona Bakery and Eatery is more than a place to eat; it’s a small cultural enclave where taste and tradition meet friendliness and community. It’s the kind of spot where neighbors drop in regularly but first-time visitors quickly find themselves pulled into a familiar kind of hospitality, discovering a new favorite dish or pastry with each visit.

Excellent Honduran and Mexican food serving brunch all day. The delicious food is cooked to order and fresh. Try the Al pastor tacos-the best I’ve had in Wisconsin. Don’t be afraid if the parking lot is full. The food is worth it. Definitely worth the trip.

The food here is fantastic! Old school diner vibes. Counter service where you order everything and take back to your table. Just know when it is busy it takes time to get your food, but it is well worth the wait. Food is so good!!!!

The food was tasty and arrived quickly. This time service was not so good. Guy who takes our order was not attentive. As a result missed eclair and received wrong cup of tea. Unfortunately the cup was dirty on the outside.

We loved this place so much, we went there for breakfast each day of our trip! The menu has a ton of variety, so there is something for everyone. The options for pastries and desserts was almost overwhelming there were so many. The food does take awhile, but that is because everything is made fresh from scratch. You can tell from the flavor that they use quality spices and ingredients. Everything we tried was delicious.

Google Maps led us to a spot across the street from Monona Bakery and Eatery, but we were really happy to look up at the right moment and notice it in its actual location. The woman at the register was friendly and helpful as I wanted a suggestion as Honduran food was new to me. She helped me choose "Plato Típico" with chicken and fried plantains. Delicious! The restaurant is bustling with activity as people walked in for pastries or ordered a meal from their menu full of great choices. You grab a menu, find a table, figure out what you want, and order at the register. Easy and casual. Nice vibe there. I wish we lived closer so we could keep eating at Monona Bakery!

We went to Monona Bakery for a late afternoon lunch on the weekend. We were just after the lunch/brunch crowds so it was not busy (thankfully.) We started off with an order of chips and medium salsa. Chips were FRESHLY made and still hot!! Yum. The medium salsa wasn’t too spicy. I ordered the Enchiladas Mole (one steak, one chicken, one cheese) and the hunny got chilaquiles with green sauce and a bowl of chili. Enchiladas were delicious! I think for my tastes the chicken worked best for the mole sauce, which was surprisingly nutty. Loved it! My husband loved the chilaquiles. Unique with the green sauce and feta cheese, and he said it hit the spot. The chili was decent. But was fairly average in flavor. Not bad, but didn’t have the flavor pizzazz we were anticipating. I took one star off for atmosphere only because there was someone continually sweeping the floor and moving chairs the whole time we ate (which was a little loud at times and distracting.) But to be expected when you dine at off hours I suppose. Not a deterrent, just an observation. Definitely will return and try another great dish. (Or get the Mole again with all 3 chicken enchiladas!!)

Absolutely love the pupusas! There are plenty of bakery items to choose from. I enjoy their specialty coffee drinks too. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a quick bite
